Excursion to Pisa and Florence

Pisa is only 20 km from Lucca and is one of the oldest Italian cities, 7.5 km from the sea on both banks of the Arno river. Its main attraction is the Leaning Tower, the construction of which took 200 years and took place in three stages. The construction of the first level of the white marble bell tower began on August 9, 1173. After the third floor was built in 1178, the tower sank due to the weakness of the ground. Its construction was suspended for a hundred years. In 1272, construction was restarted by Giovanni di Simone, the architect of the Camposanto. An additional four floors were built at an angle to balance the deflection. The construction was stopped in 1284, when the Pisans were defeated by the Genoese in the Battle of Meloria. The last floor was completed in 1372, and the bells were erected at that time. There are seven bells, one for each note of the musical scale. Squares, churches and other notable buildings: Santa Maria della Spina, Piazza del Duomo or Campo dei Miracoli, Camposanto, cemeteries and museums. Florence, the capital and cultural center of the Italian province of Tuscany, is located about 100 km from Lucca. It lies between the hills of the Appenines in the valley of the river Arno. Its population is close to half a million, but the number of people staying in the city exceeds this due to the large number of tourists and people working in the city. The city can look back on a long history, it was founded in the 1st century BC, and was ruled by the Medici from the 1400s. Today, it is home to many historical and cultural landmarks
